VMI 1.01 Pilot: the RErecap

A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS:

  • We meet Veronica Mars! High school detective with tiny jackets and flowbee hair, plus a heartbreak, an absent mother, a murdered best friend and a rape to deal with.

  • We meet Logan Echolls, a rich boy with a rage problem.

  • We meet Duncan Kane, a human screensaver.

  • We meet Wallace Fennel, taped to a flagpole then recruited to do Veronica’s bidding for the next several years. Wallace, we have seen the future and you should run! Now! Run!

  • We meet Sheriff Lamb, local law enforcement with bad jokes and even worse morals.

  • And we meet Keith Mars, disgraced ex-sheriff, private investigator and dad of the century - but why’s he being so weird about Veronica surveilling beige billionaire Jake Kane?

VMI 4.08 Years, Continents, Bloodshed

A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS:

  • A thing happens that turned the Marshmallows into Burnt Marshmallows, turned Veronica into a widow, and turned our twitter mentions into a shitshow whenever we said anything even slightly critical of Logan. But before that: this season wraps up some plots!

  • Dodie and Alonzo behead Richard Casablancas, with Matty looking on, and Clyde smiling the tiniest hint of a smile, even pauses on eating his sandwich for a moment.

  • Matty sells the Maloof ring to fund the reopening of the Sea Sprite, the only bit left of the Old Neptune boardwalk, because Big Dick’s plans to gentrify the town still happened even with him gone.

  • Keith’s medical problems are solved offscreen - just a bad combination of meds! He’s back to Keithing around! Although he has to dump Clyde as a friend, although we thought he already did that last episode? Is it our memory that is on the blink?

  • Denouement time: Penn’s the bomber! Or is it murderhead Don? No, he’s a last minute red herring, albeit a herring that has been murdered in an abandoned power plant and made to look like a suicide, and the bomber is definitely Penn and the Marses are stuck in a remote location with him - wait, wasn’t that last episode? Seriously got to get the doctor to check our memory...

  • Tick tick tick can the Marses find the limerick bomb in time? Yes! Keith is the town hero once more, after defusing the bomb Penn had planted at Kane high school.

  • But oh no, that’s not Penn’s last limerick or his last bomb; and after a quick pitstop for a Loganica wedding, Chekhov’s “don’t forget to move your car for street cleaning” blows up and takes Logan with it.

  • And Veronica, at last, goes to therapy, and leaves Neptune.

VMI 3.20 The Bitch Is Back

A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS:

  • As we know, sex people never prosper in this show, and Piz is bruised from Logan’s attack and Veronica is humiliated - and ready for revenge.

  • Veronica’s search for the sex tape culprit takes her from Piz to Logan to Dick to Chip to some other asshole Dominick to some other other asshole Gory to the secret society The Castle to JAKE KANE!?!?!

  • Of course, to cap a season that began with the Stanford Prison Experiment, we get the Milgram Experiment; and, unfortunately, it is performed on Wallace as he helps Veronica investigate the Castle.

  • Veronica breaks into what turns out to be Jake Kane’s new lonely bachelor mansion, steals his hard drive, but leaves a shred of her sweater snagged on the doggy door she shimmied in through, and is caught on the neighbour’s security tapes.

  • Keith destroys the security footage of Veronica - and maybe also his chances of winning the sheriff election. Did he win?? Find out next epi- oh but then the show was dormant for seven years.

Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars season 3 episode 20: The Bitch Is Back, and consider such mysteries as how this show, even in its last moments pre-cancellation, finds ways to introduce new awful white boys, each more revolting than the last; how many supercomputers this college contains; and whether Jake Kane painted the big terrifying portraits of his children himself.

VMI 1.17 Kanes and Abel's

A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS:

  • Veronica tracks down Abel Koontz’s daughter and hides her in a motel.

  • Veronica also grudgingly takes on the case of uppity student Sabrina, who is being harrassed to the detriment of her midterms.

  • Jake and Celeste Kane did some covering up on the night of Lilly’s death, with the help of Clarence Wiedman.

  • Who is all over the place spooking everybody in this episode, keeping it subtle and undercover by wearing a very noticeable hat.

  • And! There’s another PI in town - Vinnie Van Lowe. He has a fake moustache and no morals. But he sure can sing Hall and Oates like a champ.

VMI 1.16 Betty and Veronica

A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS:

  • The school mascot, Polly the parrot, is missing!

  • A rival school’s mascot, Billy the goat, is also missing!

  • No longer missing, though: Veronica’s mom. But she’s not in a good way…

  • One person’s having a good time, at least: Wallace! He’s the toast of the basketball team, he’s getting high fived wherever he goes, and someone’s leaving cookies in his locker.

Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 16: Betty and Veronica, and consider such mysteries as when Veronica got good at baking, why Keith Mars has to say the phrase ‘making love’ a million times this episode, and which delivery company would handle an unstable box full of raw goat meat.
