VMI: Village Mostly Invisible, an investigation of Brigadoon

A LONG TIME AGO IN THE 1954 MGM MUSICAL BRIGADOON:

  • New York City gents Gene Kelly and Van Johnson are lost in the Scottish Highlands! They want to shoot some birds, but instead stumble upon a village that’s not on the map… Brigadoon!

  • Everyone’s dancing around the town and preparing for a wedding that evening; meanwhile, sister of the bride Cyd Charisse gets to fall in love with Gene Kelly on the heathery hillsides.

  • But something’s weird, and it’s not just the fake Scottish accents, the very tight tartan trousers, the two-dimensional mountains and all the day-drinking: it’s that the village is under an enchantment whereby it only appears on one day every hundred years, and it will disappear forever if anyone tries to leave.

  • Then someone tries to leave!

  • Then Gene Kelly and Van Johnson have to leave before the village goes sleepy-byes for another hundred years. But Gene left his heart behind...

  • Lucky for him, there’s a special wake-up-Brigadoon-early clause buried deep in the small print of the enchantment, because of course there is.

VMI 3.171819 I Know Weevil's Wobble Tapes

A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS:

  • Rock star Paul Rudd is here to play a show at Hearst College, to fundraise for Piz’s awful radio station - but oh no! His backing tapes are missing! Presumed stolen! They’re not. A crime-free mystery!

  • New campus celebrity Apollo has written a hit memoir about being a child soldier in Uganda - but WAS he? - and Veronica is hired by someone claiming to be his dad - but IS he? Yes to both. Another crime-free mystery! How relaxing.

  • Until! Remember when Weevil was falsely accused of stealing Veronica’s necklace, and falsely accused of stealing the fairground cash box, and… anyway, in today’s edition of “Let’s fuck up Weevil for no good reason,” he’s accused of making fake IDs.

  • Someone has leaked a sex tape of Pizvonica! Nobody wants to see that! Especially not Logan, who beats up Piz.

  • Acting Sheriff Mars is investigating a string of Fitzpatricky burglaries, that threaten his sheriff campaign AND his friendship with Cliff.Vinnie is also running for Sheriff, and might be involved in the burglaries too?

  • And Big Dick Richard Casablancas is back to spend some time with Little Dick before going to prison for all his crimes in the first two seasons. And at long last, Dick Casablancas shows some human emotions.

Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars season 3 episodes 17, 18 and 19: I Know Weevil's Wobble Tapes, and consider such mysteries as what Wallace has been up to in all the time he has not been on screen, what a Weevil-based Law & Order spinoff would be like, and whether that's Rob Thomas in a wig? After all the wigs he has inflicted on others!

VMI 2.03 Cheatty Cheatty Bang Bang

A LONG TIME AGO ON VERONICA MARS:

  • Cassidy Casablancas hired Veronica to investigate whether his stepmother Kendall is violating her prenup by cheating on his father.

  • Shock discovery 1: Kendall IS cheating with...Logan! Well, we all knew already, but they didn’t.

  • Shock discovery 2: Richard Casablancas’s property fortune is a great big scam!

  • Jackie’s into Wallace, possibly also into some other dude, but not into Pride and Prejudice and not even Colin Firth can bring her round.

  • Keith and Alicia go on a romantic minibreak to see some jazz, eat some beef, and collide with someone from Alicia’s past…

  • And there’s another karaoke scene, so adopt the brace position, you know the drill by now.

Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars season 2 episode 3: Cheatty Cheatty Bang Bang, and consider such mysteries as whether you could really get away with taking long lens photos in a small gym, what sexpeople have being doing to/with the lamps, and whether Veronica and Jackie are competing in a tiny-jacket-off (don't try to say this aloud).

Theme Tune Investigations

A long time ago (well, 2003), the Dandy Warhols released ‘We Used To Be Friends’ and we hadn’t thought of it lately at all, except for it being the theme tune to Veronica Mars.

With the assistance of Guest Deputy Sheriff Charlie Harding of the podcast Switched On Pop, we investigate the several versions of the song, stuffing a manila folder with grunge guitars, scratchy synths, bravado and rather unusual syntax.

  • But Toxic Neptune strikes even worse in Veronica’s plan to get revenge on this guy.

  • At least things are delightful and cute and beautiful between Keith Mars and Alicia Fennel - but Clarence Wiedman’s about to ruin their bliss.

VMI 1.14: Mars vs Mars

A LONG TIME AGO, ON VERONICA MARS:

  • Student Carrie Bishop claims that Mr Rooks, the best teacher at Neptune High, has had sex with her.

  • But Veronica is determined to prove Mr Rooks innocent! She doesn’t like Carrie, and she loves Mr Rooks’s wacky theatrical teacher tricks.

  • This puts her at odds with Keith all episode - we hate it when the Marses fight! But we love the very good prank he plays on Veronica.

  • Logan needs Veronica to prove that his mother is still alive.

  • And Veronica pays another visit to Abel Koontz on death row.

Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate Veronica Mars Season 1 Episode 14: Mars vs Mars, and crack such mysteries as whether there’s only one cafe in Neptune, whether a Teacher With Wacky Fun Teaching Methods actually makes you learn anything, if you can pay a visit to Death Row just for a mic drop moment, and why Veronica is channelling Sheriff Lamb this episode.
